Buckwheat Waffles | Garlic, My Soul

Whew! The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of new things and setbacks, but I am hoping after this heat spell (starting today through Friday, LA get your fall on already!) we’ll be back to normal around here. In the meantime, I wanted to show you another one of my breakfast in bed posts from Joie de Vivre’s blog, Joyride, that I did over the summer!

This breakfast was based off of the Citizen Hotel in Sacramento, California. My recipe is a classic, if somewhat dramatic, breakfast. This waffle tower is the perfect start to a big day in the city, these waffles use half buckwheat flour and half whole wheat, making that syrup you’re putting on top seem not too indulgent after all.

To pair with the hefty main course, I put together a grapefruit-and-avocado salad (California grown, of course) that’s barely sweetened with a hint of honey. Although, if you use sweet Rio Red grapefruit, you might not even need the honey!

Hey guys! Happy Friday before a three day weekend! How exciting.

So I have a couple of things to tell you today:

1) I sprained my wrist playing indoor soccer. This has lead to the slow realization that I have to only do standing-posed yoga, that I cannot hold a cast iron with my left hand, and that maybe I shouldn’t play so hard because I am 29. As a result, you might have noticed that things around here are going to be…simple for the next few weeks. I gotta let this heal, which is hard for me, but I am trying to be gentle.

2) I have been doing a lot of reading this summer, and right now I am 100 pages into “Stiff” which is about cadavers and all the uses for them (crash test dummies, medical testing, etc.) It is FASCINATING and I am trying not to over share to Jeff, who is generally not interested in hearing gruesome information about bodies before bed. I love nonfiction and if you do, too, you’ll want to pick this up!

3) I can’t believe we haven’t given you a playlist in a year, but we haven’t. Here’s one that I often can be found listening to on repeat.

4) It’s Labor Day weekend, and that means time off + BBQs. Thinking about several recipes from this list, mainly grilled pizza and all kinds of meat skewers. What are y’all doing?

5) This piece from The Salt – I hope that Dock to Dish catches on as yet another way for us to connect to our local ecology. I love seeing all the people that are surrounding me be passionate about their line of work – it gives me hope for the future!

What are you cooking this weekend? What have you been reading lately? Tell me, I’ll be done with this book soon enough!

Happy weekend, chickadees!

Seasonal Produce | Garlic, My Soul | Megan Roy Designs

We blinked. It was September. No one knows how these things happen, they just do. But we’ve found ourselves almost to labor day and suddenly cooler weather is here (for one second, we know you LA, you’re about to heat right back up) and we’re getting excited for the harvest season.

Apples
Bok Choy
Brussels Sprouts
Corn
Pears
Persimmons
Plums
Potatoes
Radishes
Snap Peas
Turnips

There are some dishes I want you to make immediately that make fall my favorite month.

Apple Bread | Garlic My Soul

This apple bread is everything you guys. Talk about fall in a dish. This was made for our friend Jeremy’s birthday a few years back, and it was a great decision. A perfect snack, breakfast, or a celebratory treat!

Brussels Sprout Hash | Garlic, My Soul

This Brussels Sprout Hash is one of our new classics for Thanksgiving. The chard, bacon, Brussels, and spices come together for a savory sweet unexpected side that will make everyone happy – who doesn’t love Brussels when they have bacon in them!?

Pear Crisp | Garlic, My Soul

Crisp is one of fave desserts, but Pear Crisp we love for its rich flavors and crunchy top. We love apples, but when it comes to crisp, I think that pear wears it best. This is a great dish to cook in your cast iron and serve sizzling hot with cold ice cream.

Creamy Potato Soup | Garlic, My Soul

This is one of Jeff’s favorite dishes, and when the weather turns here (which won’t be for a month, curse you LA!) we will be rotating in Creamy Potato Soup for dinners. This is a great comfort food for a chilly night!

What are you guys looking forward to eating this fall? Let me know!

The Hall | Joie de Vivre | Garlic, My Soul

Hey chickens! Apologies for the slow week last week – I sprained my wrist last Monday and was a little slow to the computer – not to mention, it’s been 90+ degrees in LA all week…can you believe it? We don’t have AC, so we’ve been taking respite in movie theaters, grocery stores, and the like.

ANYWAYS Last week I shared the first of four breakfast-in-bed posts I did over the summer with Joie de Vivre. Today, I want to get y’all excited about the Hall, opening in South Beach Miami this coming fall! The brightly colored decor and the art deco vibes of this newly renovated hotel remind me of endless perfect summer. The Hall is going to be a destination to add to your “Must See” list – with its brightly colored walls, vintage inspired furniture, and proximity to the best spots in South Beach, I cannot wait for it to open!

Now let’s talk food – the Cuban-inspired cuisine in the Miami area made me crave tropical fruit, sweet coffee, and of course some grilled Cuban eggs sandwiches! For my breakfast platter, I made two fried eggs, grilled up some French bread (which was slathered on both sides with butter, for good measure!) and heated up some ham. I served it with a side of mango and papaya fruit salad – the perfect healthy balance. And, of course, a Cuban breakfast wouldn’t be complete without Café con Leche – brewed espresso with sugar and hot milk frothed to perfection.
