Can you believe we’re already 4 months into the year? How did that happen? In case you completely lost track of time (ahem, like me), and are completely lost about where we are in terms of seasonal veggies, here are a few that you should stock up on now: carrots, asparagus, basil, and artichokes. All of which can be found in this month’s desktop calendar. What a convenient reminder!

A friend recently took a poll on Facebook for LA coffee shop recommendations, and Jennie immediately suggested Javista. The ladies of Garlic My Soul are quite the coffee conneseuirs as well, so I knew I had to give it a try!
Mary Costa Photography for Garlic My Soul | Javista | 001Javista opened a year ago and has been booming ever since! It’s right on Sunset Blvd in the heart of Hollywood. They feature a variety of artwork in the shop, including these cool screenprints. Mary Costa Photography for Garlic My Soul | Javista | 002I have to say, the baristas at Javista were so sweet and helpful! I asked for a latte with some sort of added flavor. They don’t have syrups, so the gentleman suggested I add some white chocolate – DONE. This latte was a game changer!! Seriously, one of the very best I’ve had, and I texted Jennie right away to thank her for bringing me to this magical place. Added bonus – I overheard the barista saying that their espresso is twice as strong as a normal shot! Mary Costa Photography for Garlic My Soul | Javista | 003Now for the turkey sandwich. If you know me at all, you know I could eat a turkey sandwich almost every day and be happy. This one was extraordinary! They shave the turkey right then and there on a deli slicer, which is always an awesome sign of great things to come. It came with prosciutto, arugula, avocado, and heirloom tomatoes – I must confess that I held the cheese just to balance out my dairy intake, but I’d imagine it’d make the sandwich even better (if that’s possible). Mary Costa Photography for Garlic My Soul | Javista | 004The most delicious latte and an incredible turkey sandwich. Truly my bliss. What a treat!

Avocado Tangelo Smoothie | Garlic, My Soul

Although it’s cooled off in Los Angeles, and I have heard from afar other people are still getting snow, I am determined that spring is coming and everyone will have sunshine soon.

To help you out until that’s a reality, I have a smoothie for you that is delicious and easy. Which is exactly why I love smoothies. You throw everything in a blender, and then you’ve got a delicious snack or meal.

Avocado Tangelo Smoothie | Garlic, My SoulAvocado & Tangelo Smoothie

1/2 avocado
1 tangelo, quarter (and peeled) (or orange or Cara Cara orange, your choice)
1/4 cup yogurt (I used plain by use what you’ve got)
2 carrots roughly chopped (I cut mine into like six pieces each)
1 fistful of spinach (roughly 1/2 cup packed)
2 tbsp fresh parsley
1-2 tbsp fresh grated ginger (to taste, I like mine gingery)
juice of 1 lemon
splash of milk (or two, depending on how thick you want it)

Mix everything in the blender together until smooth. This made enough for two smaller snacks or maybe one meal…do what you feel in your heart.

Give the smoothie about ten minutes in the fridge to get cold again and to marry…the ginger will be more pronounced and you’ll be happy you did it. Feel free to use whatever citrus you have lying around and whatever greens, too – you could use clementines or kale, or a lime instead of a lemon, or cabbage…you get the gist. Really what makes this awesome is the creamy avocado and the kick of ginger. The rest is up to you.

Happy Friday, friends! I hope you have an adventurous weekend planned full of smoothies and walks outside and reading and yoga. (Aka what I am doing.)

Buttery Coconut Coffee | Garlic, My Soul

A couple of weeks ago, I saw the buzz on the Internet for putting butter in my coffee. I love butter, and I love coffee, and coconut oil is quickly moving up on the top ten list, and so I figured, why not?

So here’s what I did: I took a cup of coffee, a tablespoon of ghee, and a tablespoon of coconut oil. I stuck them in the blender. And then I drank the frothy drink, trying to forget what I was drinking and keep an open mind.

I am going to have to try this again, maybe with a weaker coffee (I used Toddy coffee and it was definitely strong on coffee, and had a very rich taste) but I think I liked it…it was so different than anything that I had that it took half the drink to get used to the idea. But the downside? It definitely cannot be a meal replacement. I had it for breakfast and was hungry two hours later (I normally go about four hours between meals at least.)

I think I might want to add just a hint of honey, too, to add some sweetness to it.

What do you guys think? Have you tried butter in your coffee? Do you like it? What’s your recipe?

I’m certain I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: I love brunch! Breakfast foods are by far the best foods. Lucky for me, London likes breakfast too. So much so, they have a special English breakfast! While traditional English breakfast is not so vegetarian friendly, there is almost always a veggie alternative, and now, here, just for you, I’m sharing my vegetarian English breakfast menu. This tasty meal is super easy to make at home.

Menu:
Fried Eggs
Heinz canned baked beans (vegetarian of course!)
Whole-wheat bread
Fried tomatoes
Veggie sausages – I used Quorn, the best brand of fake meat products (in my opinion!)
Hash browns
Olive Oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Serves: 2 hungry breakfast lovers

Directions:
Grate several small potatoes (I used about five) through the cheese grater. Heat a bit of olive oil in two small frying pans. Add four frozen veggie sausages to one pan, and the grated potatoes to the other. Season the potatoes with pepper and leave to brown on one side, then flip them on over and leave them to brown on the other side. In a larger frying pan, heat another bit of oil to fry four eggs over easy (or to your yolk hardness liking.) Chop the tomatoes in half, and add them to any frying pan where you have some room! Warm the beans in the microwave and toast your bread accordingly. Once everything is cooked and warmed, dig in and enjoy!
