I read all the books. My father re-read them. And for a few years seeing one of the Lord of the Rings films with my Dad became an important Christmas ritual.<\/p>\n<p>This holiday season, I was excited to renew that tradition by seeing the newest Tolkien film, The Hobbit.\u00a0 In preparation, I started reading the book and I was pleased to discover that Mr. Bilbo Baggins is a foodie!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/eat-like-a-hobbit\/dsc_1611\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9110\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9110\" title=\"DSC_1611\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_1611.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_1611.jpg 800w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_1611-652x435.jpg 652w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_1611-449x300.jpg 449w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_1611-149x100.jpg 149w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a>The Hobbit opens with a description of a hobbit-hole <em>which means comfort. <\/em>Shortly after that, 13 uninvited guests show up for tea and then stay for supper. In other words, it\u2019s your typical day in the life of the Garlic, My Soul kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>The first chapter of the Hobbit casually lists the menu for an impromptu tea with 13 dwarfs: tea; beer; seed-cakes; ale; porter; coffee; cakes; buttered scones; raspberry jam and apple-tart; mince-pies and cheese; eggs; cold chicken and pickles; and biscuits. That\u2019s just one meal! If you\u2019re like 10 million other people, and you saw the movie last weekend, you know there was a delightful scene in which Jackson captured the wealth of Bilbo Baggins\u2019 well-stocked larder. All this got me thinking about the kinds of hearty, home-grown, comfort foods that hobbits must eat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/eat-like-a-hobbit\/dsc_1593\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9111\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9111\" title=\"DSC_1593\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_1593.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_1593.jpg 800w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_1593-652x432.jpg 652w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_1593-451x300.jpg 451w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_1593-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Right away, I thought of my favorite cold-weather comfort food, cassoulet. Cassoulet is a traditional French peasant dish that\u2019s slow-cooked and features seasonal root vegetables, cannellini beans, and pork or duck. The peasant roots of this dish have always appealed to me, because its most important ingredients are interchangeable depending on whatever you might have on hand. I like to think a hobbit would also appreciate a dish that is at once so practical and so delicious.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019ve made cassoulet <a href=\"http:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/cassoulet-beans-found-in-peasant-food\/\">before<\/a>\u00a0with spicy pork sausage using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realsimple.com\/food-recipes\/browse-all-recipes\/winter-cassoulet-10000000608424\/index.html\">this recipe<\/a> from Real Simple. This time, however, I substituted spicy lamb merguez sausage both to try something new and because it felt more hobbit-esque.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/eat-like-a-hobbit\/onion-rolls\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9112\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9112\" title=\"onion-rolls\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/onion-rolls.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/onion-rolls.jpg 800w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/onion-rolls-652x432.jpg 652w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/onion-rolls-451x300.jpg 451w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/onion-rolls-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To accompany my lamb stew, I needed hearty homemade bread. <a href=\"http:\/\/thepioneerwoman.com\/cooking\/2009\/09\/rosemary-onion-bread-with-blue-cheese-topping\/\">This recipe<\/a>\u00a0from the Pioneer Woman for rosemary onion bread with blue cheese topping is an old favorite and seemed perfect for the job. I swear I saw a plate of these exact rolls being passed around by the dwarfs in the movie!<\/p>\n<p>And to wash it all down? Ice cold beer of course.
