{"id":7575,"date":"2012-08-27T10:23:19","date_gmt":"2012-08-27T17:23:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/?p=7575"},"modified":"2012-09-06T08:47:16","modified_gmt":"2012-09-06T15:47:16","slug":"home-coffee-roasting-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/home-coffee-roasting-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Home Coffee Roasting Class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For my birthday, my coworkers got me a gift certificate to go to a coffee roasting class at the <a href=\"http:\/\/instituteofdomestictechnology.com\/\">Institute of Domestic Technology.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This class taught the basics of how to taste coffee, including a cupping, and then dived into finding the right roast for you &#8211; and roasting our own coffee with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wabash-Valley-Farms-25008-Whirley-Pop\/dp\/B00004SU35\">Whirley Pops<\/a>! \u00a0It was taught by Ian Riley of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plowandgun\">Plow &amp; Gun<\/a>, accompanied by\u00a0Joseph\u00a0Shuldiner, the director of the institute.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca and I attend this past Saturday, and started out by enjoying two baby goats, Poppyseed and Apple. He tried to eat my purse, and my camera. No matter.<\/p>\n<p>Back to coffee. The thing I learned from Ian really was that if you buy ground coffee, &#8220;you&#8217;re used to the taste of stale coffee.&#8221; This stuck with me because the coffee we tasted was completely different from the taste of the coffee I tend to brew at home &#8212; even though I do grind my coffee beans myself.<\/p>\n<p>Ian told us it is best to drink coffee within the week it was roasted, which I am sure most of us don&#8217;t given that we buy from the store pre-packaged roast coffee. I must say at this point I had a fair amount of coffee in my eyes, due to the fact that I breathe out whilst breathing in the cup &#8212; not a good idea.<\/p>\n<p>Then, Ian and Joseph filled the cups with water all the way to the top, and the next step was to smell the coffee as it brewed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/DSC_0357.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7579\" title=\"DSC_0357\" src=\"http:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/DSC_0357.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/DSC_0357.jpg 800w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/DSC_0357-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/DSC_0357-451x300.jpg 451w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/DSC_0357-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It apparently is customary to have the cups on the edge of the table for pouring purposes, which was pretty scary because I was sure I was going to knock one over and spill everywhere. You use the back of a spoon to break the grounds at the top, also while smelling the coffee, also creating a foam over the top. Next, it&#8217;s time to taste! We tasted six coffees; three from very different regions of the world, and three that were\u00a0similar\u00a0beans but roasted differently. My favorites were Ethiopian beans, and the dark roast, which is comical as Ethiopian beans can&#8217;t be brewed dark. Go figure, of course I&#8217;d pick a hard combination. This took about 13 minutes when all was said and done for me to get to a dark roast. You start with green beans (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sweetmarias.com\/index.php\">this is where<\/a> we were given a recommendation to get them from), and use the Whirley Pop (we seemed to be at a medium heat) that you have already heated. He also recommended a burr coffee grinder for even grinding and a more consistent grain size (do you notice a pattern of consistency?)<\/p>\n<p>We also got to bring home some green beans to roast ourselves. I learned so much from this class (from how to cup, how to roast, and how to brew coffee) that I recommend it for anyone who likes coffee as part of their everyday ritual. As I sit here and sip the coffee I roasted myself, I know it&#8217;s worth it.
