Fantastic, right?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because it was born from one fantastic, lovely and quirky woman, Audrey Shulman. It was a dating scheme to sit in bars with cake for one year and fifty recipes \u201ctrying to bake (her) way to a boyfriend\u201d. Instead of bemoaning her chronic boyfriendlessness, she saw an opportunity to learn a bit about herself. She also saw the opportunity to offer cake to strangers.<\/p>\n<p>Including me and Jennie.<\/p>\n<p>As Jennie and I found ourselves in Audrey\u2019s beautiful, airy apartment one hot Saturday morning we were privy firsthand to Audrey\u2019s incredible generosity and panache.<\/p>\n<p>This heartening Southern transplant has class, charm and spunk in spades. We spent the better part of the morning eating donuts, drinking coffee and waxing poetic about parking meters and Costco check out lines and quickly found that \u201cstranger\u201d doesn\u2019t really have a place in Audrey\u2019s vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC_5178.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16211\" src=\"http:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC_5178-801x1200.jpg\" alt=\"Cakebarring with Audrey | Garlic, My Soul\" width=\"800\" height=\"1199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC_5178-801x1200.jpg 801w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC_5178-667x1000.jpg 667w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC_5178-500x749.jpg 500w, https:\/\/garlicmysoul.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC_5178.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Her book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/62-9781419715822-0\">Sitting in Bars with Cake<\/a><\/em> is no different. She is a gracious writer and invites you up to the barstool right next to her. She is also one seriously hilarious woman and makes sitting on that barstool with her a treat far beyond the cake she is offering you.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s not to diminish the cake at all. Her recipes are unique, complex, traditional and daring.<\/p>\n<p>The cake she made for us that Saturday was a Chocolate Prune Cake with Salty Frosting. In the dry L.A. heat it was heavenly. Light and moist without the density you would think, the salty whipped cream fresh in that way only homemade whipped cream can be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s almost cheating. It\u2019s the easiest way to get a compliment ever,\u201d Audrey says apron-clad, locking in her mixing bowl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople go inexplicably insane when offered free dessert,\u201d she writes. Her Chocolate Prune Cake recipe is hilariously paired with an encounter Audrey had with \u201cThe Guy Who Claimed to be Full.&#8221; These anecdotes are then distilled down to the lesson she learned from that specific encounter, in this case: \u201c\u2019I\u2019m full = \u2018I have a girlfriend,\u2019 because guys are never full.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Jennie and I were categorically full by the end of our day with Audrey.
